Guests will immerse themselves in the rhythms and beauty of farm life and nature, learning about local food and relaxing in the Apulian countryside, with the possibility of making tasting-excursions to wine/cheese/ olive oil producers and being involved in farm activities (grape harvest, olive harvest, cheese making). At the same time, visitors will discover some of the most remarkable architectural, artistic and historic treasures of Apulia and the neighboring Region of Basilicata, including remarkable UNESCO world heritage sites.


Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival at Bari airport or railway station, meet with the tour host and transfer to the hotel in Altamura. Welcome aperitif to discuss the itinerary for the week. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2
After breakfast, transfer to the High Murgia National Park for a guided tour. The “Murgia” is a chain of low karstic hills, where the characteristic stones alternate with meadows and pasturelands. This harsh natural setting, characterized by the presence of ancient farmhouses and shelters for sheep (“jazzi”), is the natural habitat of wild fauna and protected species. From here, transfer to the “Pulo”, a vast karstic dolina, located outside the urban center of Altamura, which is the result of the collapsing of a vast subterranean cavity. Lunch in a typical farmhouse. In the afternoon, visit of the historic center of Altamura, including: the Cathedral, built in the 13th century by the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, the minor churches and the “Claustri” (that is blinds alleys opening into little squares with only one entrance). Stop to a typical bakery, for a live demonstration of making the famous Altamura bread, cooked in a traditional wood-fired oven. Tasting of bakery products. Dinner and overnight stay in Altamura.

Day 3
After breakfast, transfer to a typical farmhouse, to take part in the seasonal farming activities, such as olive picking, grape harvest or making fresh cheese. The lunch will be prepared using the local products of the farm. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the countryside, to visit the farmhouse and to taste and buy home-made products (jams, cheeses, preserves). Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4
After breakfast, transfer to Matera, located in the neighboring region of Basilicata, which was declared European Capital of Culture for 2019. Several movies have been filmed here in recent years, including Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ and Ben –Hur remake. Visit to its cave-dwelling districts, known as “Sassi” (meaning “Stones”), representing an astonishing UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch in a typical restaurant overlooking the “Sassi”. In the afternoon, you can do some shopping and enjoy free time in Matera or to visit some museums or take part in the cultural events organized in the town. Return to Altamura, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5
After breakfast, transfer to Bari for a guided tour of the town including: the “Castello Svevo”, that is the imposing medieval fortress, the massive Romanesque Cathedral and the “Basilica di San Nicola”, whose beautiful 900 year old vaulted crypt is the final resting place of Saint Nicholas. Local women, in the very heart of the old town, will offer you a live demonstration of how to make “orecchiette”. Lunch in a typical restaurant. The afternoon is at leisure to have a walk or do some shopping. Return to Altamura, dinner at your leisure and overnight stay.

Day 6
After breakfast, transfer to a local Olive Press for a short lecture on the different production stages of extra virgin olive oil. Tasting of several types of olive oil produced on site. Lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to a winery, with a detailed description of all the production stages as well as tasting of the local production. Return to Altamura, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7
After breakfast, transfer to Polignano a Mare, hometown of the famous Italian singer Domenico Modugno, stretching along a jagged coastline 30 km south of Bari. Visit of the old town, including: the historic centre, the mother church dating back to 1295, and “Lama Monachile” (a deep cave to the west of the old town). Lunch in a typical restaurant. In the afternoon, transfer to Alberobello, a little town famous all over the world for its traditional house buildings, called “Trulli”, that is whitewashed stone huts with conical roofs, today world heritage site of UNESCO. Return to Altamura, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8

After breakfast, leisure time and then transfer to the railway station or to the Airport in Bari for your return flight home.
